Welcome back to returning families – and welcome to families who are new to Addison this year! It’s hard to imagine that the last time we were all on campus together was March 13th – and difficult to accept that as we start the new school year, we’ll be doing so remotely. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced us all to do things differently and school life is not immune to the need for change. As we begin the 2020-2021 school year under the distance learning model, the PTA Executive Board remains focused on supporting our students, families, teachers and staff in every way that we can. We do this with our advocacy, community building and partnering with Ms. Boyce to determine critical funding needs for Addison.
Our most important work remains to advocate for every child. I strongly encourage you to join the PTA and become more involved in shaping how education will move forward under the distance learning model and when safe, transitioning to our students to return to campus.
We are proud of the role the PTA plays to support our school with items such as student learning materials, teacher grants, library books, field trips, enrichment programs for students and community-building family events throughout the year. The Addison Adult Party & Auction is a storied part of our history; our main fundraiser which fosters community building, memories and friendships during the event (and the parties that follow). Given the COVID-19 restrictions, we are adjusting our approach for the 2020-21 school year and are shifting to a direct ask to support the aspects which will still continue such as teacher grants for distance learning, student learning materials to be brought home. A $150 per student donation is recommended, however we encourage families to give any amount appropriate for your financial situation. Thanks to the generosity of Mendocino Farms restaurant and the support of our Addison families, we were able to raise over $700 at Give Back Night. On January 15th, over 45 families ate dinner at the restaurant, where 50% of all proceeds went to our school. Thanks to all of you for continuing to support our educational programs, field trips, library, and extracurricular activities at Addison!
Wednesday, January 15th, will be “GIVE BACK TO ADDISON NIGHT” at Mendocino Farms. The restaurant has been a wonderful champion of Addison and continues to donate funds to our school. Please show your support by joining other Addison families for dinner between 5:00–8:00 pm on Wednesday, January 15th.
Bring the Addison flier (in your Monday take-home envelopes) and Mendocino Farms will donate 50% of your entire purchase directly to our school! This is an easy way to earn money for our programs and teachers.
How are field trips funded at Addison? The Addison PTA sponsors 100% of the Kindergarten-3rd grade field trips and the 4th and 5th grade “day trips”.
If the PTA sponsors 100% of field trips, why is there a separate “ask” for 4th and 5th grade students? The PTA funds 100% of field trips which take place during “classroom hours” (e.g 8:15 AM – 2:20/2:45 PM) for all grade levels. In 4th & 5th grade, Addison students are provided the special opportunity to participate in overnight/sleep away field trips. These programs have a significantly higher costs than the “classroom hours” programs. The PTA is not able to fund these programs and families of those students are asked for a contribution.
What is the “PTA Field Trip Transportation Fund” on the One Payment Form? In order to provide safe and reliable bus transportation to more distant field trip locations, the PTA underwrites the transportation costs so that parent drivers are not needed. The PTA suggests a voluntary donation of $75 per student to the PTA Field Trip Transportation Fund. While participation in this contribution typically exceeds 50%, this fund does not cover all transportation expenses. Therefore the PTA also relies on our general funds to cover field trip transportation costs.
What does the 4th & 5th grade contribution cover? Your contribution covers the program fees including admission, room & board, instruction and program supplies for each student, teacher and adult chaperones. For the 2019-20 school year, the suggested contribution is $315 per student.
Is a contribution mandatory for a student to participate? While state law does not allow school districts to charge fees to students for educational activities, these programs rely on financial contributions from participating families. A donation is not required to participate.
What if I want to contribute less or more than the amount that is suggested? Families that choose to contribute may do so at any amount. The goal is 100% participation. Give what your family is comfortable with contributing either as a one-time payment or over 9 months. Extra donations are always appreciated to ensure that the programs selected by the grade-level teaching teams are available to all students.
